Reconstructive Psychiatry
Dr. Woodworth practices what he calls reconstructive psychiatry, an approach that begins with looking at each person from a wellness perspective. Combining traditional and nontraditional methods, he helps individuals find their unique paths in life.
In general, medicine reaches for what is optimal. We know what a healthy lung looks like and take measures to return an infected lung to its optimal state. In this way, all medicine is reconstructive. Neuroscientists have been making great strides in understanding the brain, but we still do not know what an optimal brain or consciousness looks like.
Typical psychiatry bases its diagnoses on norms, what is typical for most people. It does not strive for each person's optimal psychological state. Psychopathology depends on identifying mental illness, which may be any set of behaviors outside of the norm, and attempting to cure that illness by moving the patient closer to the norm.
In contrast, reconstructive psychiatry uses path-psychology to help clients develop toward their optimal Selfs. Not everyone falls within average of human behavior. At the Center for Reconstructive Psychiatry, we help people discover what is normal for them.
